Follow the plan you made to create your product (recipe flyer).
Then write a paragraph saying whether your plan worked EXACTLY. Since you are beginners at making production plans, many things could go wrong. Did you leave out any important steps? Was the actual time to produce each step different from your estimated time?
Year 7, it all starts with a Plan (Criterion C - maximum 6 points).
Feb 22
1. Resources: Computer, Publisher 2007, Recipe, Image, Why I Like It, What It Means To My Family, Design Specification, Chosen Design.
2. Now, make a step-by-step plan of what you will do to create your recipe flyer AND estimate how long it will take you.
Example:
Open Publisher 2007, 1 minute
Choose Publication Type - Flyers, 1 minute
Select Event Party 2 - 1 minute
Change background color to pink, 1 minute
Insert recipe - See Chosen Design, 2 minutes
Insert picture - See Chosen Design, 2 minutes
Continue on until you have completed all the steps you think you will need and the time that it will take you.
Feb 26
Finish your step by step plan.
Write a paragraph saying why you think your plan will work. Include the fact that you have done a tutorial and have had experience using Publisher 2007;-)
Learning objectives: devleop a basic time line and write instructions for making the product/solution.
Year 7 - Hope you enjoyed your Activity Day. The next one is on March 15 and the focus will be Technology;-) I can't wait.
1. 15 minutes typing
Today we will focus on the Design - Criterion B Maximum 6 points
According to the IBO: Students are expected to generate more than two feasible designs that meet the design specification and to evaluate these against the design specification.
Students are then expected to select one design, justify their choice and evaluate this in detail against the design specification.
To get a 5-6: The student generates more than two designs and selects one with several reasons. The student attempts to explain how his/her design meets his/her specifications.
2. Create 3 possible designs (you can use templates or create your own) and
Insert text boxes but NOT the text for your recipe.
REMEMBER: all your information (complete recipe, 3 interesting facts, what it means to my family, image AND your first name and tutor group) must fit on the recipe flyer.
2.Follow these instructions: Type 3. Formulate a Design Specification (left justified, font size 16, bold, underlined)
3.Design Specification must include: -3 interesting historical notes about your recipe or individual ingredients. -how the recipe is important to your family -why you like the recipe -Create 3 more design specifications (let's brainstorm some possibilities)
4. Then create a survey/questionnaire to evaluate your product/solution(recipe page). Remember to include a scale. For example, on a scale of 1 to 5 - 1 equals awful and 5 equals awesome!
- Make 1 question for each item in your design specification - Keep everything ordered properly;-)
Well done Year 7 - Now it's time to start stage 2 of the Investigation. This is the part where we do research.

Learning objective: Students will use the internet and conduct research
How do I think and act? How am I changing? How can I look after myself and others?
This area of interaction is about how humanity is affected by a range of social issues. It includes an appreciation of these effects in various cultural settings and at different times. It is concerned with social and emotional health and intelligence - key aspects of development leading to a complete and balanced lifestyle.
Health and social education encourages respect for the self as well as respect for others.
Above is an example of the product that you will create. (Click on the picture to enlarge it)
Now, let's begin! Follow these easy instructions:
- Open a new Word 2007 Document - Type your name and tutor group in the upper left hand corner of the page (Remember to use Font size 12 for formal documents;-) - Type INVESTIGATE (capitalized, centered) on the next line (Font size 16, Bold)
- Type Identify the Problem (left justified, font size 16, bold, underlined)
Now, write 1 or 2 paragraphs (Write in paragraphs, indent the first line of the paragraph)
Identify the problem 1-Restate (say again in your own words) the problem (from Unit of Work)
2-Explain and give details about the problem.
3-Say how you will solve the problem (Explain and give details)
4-Say how Health and Social Education connects to your project (Explain and give details, examples)
Learning Objectives: Students will be introduced to the Unit of Work and begin the Investigation. They write one paragraph explaining the problem and how they will solve the problem.
Create - using your Plan as a guide, create your Poster.
When creating - you must follow your plan. Then evaluate the plan. Did it work EXACTLY as you thought it would?
Follow these guidelines for maximum points (6): -Use appropriate techniques and equipment -Follow the plan and mention any changes made -Your poster must follow the design specification and attractive
EVALUATE is the final stage of the Design Cycle - Let's go!
Evaluating is an important part of any project. 1) Show others your poster and let them answer the questionnaire you made in Investigate 2) Analyse the answers 3) Assess your own performance throughtout the process of creating the poster including your engagement in the project and your ability to meet deadlines
Learning Objective: The student will: follow plan to create poster, evaluate and critique plan.
2. Now, let's take 20 minutes to finish our Investigation from Friday. . .
What is a Design Specification? Let's think about the poster that we want to create and write some Design Specifications: The poster must: -include all 5 steps of the design cycle -be colourful -be kid-friendly
How can we test our product? One way would be to create a questionnaire Generate (make) tool for evaluating product (poster)- let's talk about this, then include the answer on your Investigation.
3. Now onto the design
You are to make 3 possible designs that meet the design specification and evaluate each against the design specification. Next, you are to choose one and evaluate this in detail against the design specification.
Open Word 2007 Click on the Insert tab Look at the Illustrations group Find Smart Art and click on that
Please explore Smart Art and create 2 designs. Name them Design 1, and Design 2. Evaluate both against the design specification. (*Example: Design 1 meets the design specification.)
Then choose 1 of the designs and fully evaluate it against the design specification. This means that you must explain;-)
3. Open your Word document entitled "Design Cycle". You have your Identify the Problem paragraph finished. Please show it to me.
4. We started the Develop a Design Brief and your task was to answer the following questions:
-What is the Design Cycle?
-How many stages does the MYP Design Cycle consist of? Name them.
-What Microsoft Office programs can I use to create a poster showing the MYP Design Cycle?
5. Now let's begin the Formulate a Design Specification. This is the part of the project where we describe conditions, requirements and restrictions. For this project I will give you the Design Specification. The poster must: include all 5 steps, be kid-friendly, and colourful.
6. Let's create a test to evaluate your product against the design specification.
Learning objectives: Students will finish research. Students will create a test(questionnaire) to evaluate their product.
International Day of Peace - September 21 Have a peaceful day Year 7
Year 7, we have begun to document our learning.
There are 3 tasks to do in the Investigate: Identify the Problem, Develop a Design Brief, and Formulate a Design Specification.
1. Practice typing for 15 minutes;-) 2. Open the Word document (called Design Cycle) we started on Friday. 3. Show me the 2 sentences you have written. 4. Now, you will be organized into groups and work together to complete the Identify the Problem paragraph (following the template).
Next, we will begin to work on Task 2 - Develop a Design Brief.
5. Please do a keyword search on Google to answer the following questions:
What is the Design Cycle?
How many stages does the MYP Design Cycle consist of? Name them.
What Microsoft Office programs can I use to create a poster of showing the MYP Design Cycle?
Learning objectives: Students will restate unit problem and say how this problem will be solved. Students will relate this to an area of interaction. Student will define the design cycle and identify stages. Student will research Microsoft Office for a program which will allow them to create a poster.
1) Let's look at the structure of the documentation process. Remember that this is a scholastic document (a formal school project) and should conform to certain standards. That means that is a school project that you must hand in and you will be graded upon this work so it has to look professional;-)
We will type in font size 12. We will type in black. We will use a formal font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Ariel).
Let's look at the template for the Investigate that will make this process easier for us: Click Here
First, let's start the day with a little typing lesson. Click here to visit Free Typing Games. This site offers free lessons and games. To become a really proficient (fast and accurate) typist, you should do a combination of both lessons and games. Lessons help because they show you where you should place your hands on the keyboard and give practice with specific letter combinations. Lessons help typing become automatic. Games are fun and help you build speed!
Next, let's take a look at the 5 steps of the MYP Design Cycle. It's really important to understand how it works.
Welcome to Technology Year 7! You are now in the Senior School - Hooray!
We have lots to do in the next couple of weeks so let's get started.
1. We will view the introduction to Technology 2009/10 2. We will log onto computers and change password 3. We will organize folders 4. We will log onto class blog (http://year7it.blogspot.com) and become acquainted with the information located in the sidebar. 5. We will look at the Design Cycle Unit of Work
Learning objective: Settle in and gain an understanding of expectations of the term.
It's time for classes to end but I've come across some (game) sites that are valuable in more ways than one.
First of all they contribute to student learning while being fun at the same time and they help others: Free Rice - a vocabulary game that donates rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger Aid to Children - another vocab game Free Poverty - geography game. See how many cups of water you can donate by testing your knowledge about the world. Each correct answer means they will be donating 10 cups on your behalf. Free Corn - the more you visit, the more you give . . . Free Kibble - helps to support animal shelters Free Kibble Kat - helps feed hungry cats
Year 7 - we have started the countdown until summer holidays.
But before we go let's have a look at a website full of Web 2.0 tools that could be valuable to you: http://bighugelabs.com/. There are lots of tools/toys her to explore.
Students are expected to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification in an objective manner based on testing. They are expected to explain how the product/solution could be improved as a result of these evaluations.
Students are expected to evaluate their own performance at each stage of the design cycle and to suggest ways in which their performance could be improved.
To get a 6 the student: evaluates the product/solution and his or her own performance and suggests ways in which these could be improved. The student tests at least part of the product/solution and evaluates it against the design specification.
Today's tasks:
1 - show your final product/solution (the recipe flyer) to 5 other people.
2- have the 5 other people evaluate your flyer using the questions you made in the Investigation.
3-Write a paragraph analyzing the feedback from your mates. and suggest ways to improve.
4 - Write a paragraph evaluating your own performance and suggest ways to improve.
7 - BAG - You are such great kids to give up some of your lunch time to come to IT. This is such a fun project - it will be great to finish it!
So today, let's begin the CREATE (let's look at the previous posting to see what you need to do to get a 6).
Now, let's go!
Today, you will have 2 (easy) tasks
1. Use your plan to create your recipe flyer,
2. Create your recipe flyer,
and 1 task for homework:
3. Write a paragraph saying if your plan worked (exactly) or not. Include any changes you made to your original design. Remember to give details and explain everything;-)
Year 7 - This is the moment we have all been waiting for (lol): Create!
Now, let's see what the MYP asks us to do in this stage of the Design Cycle.
Create - Criterion D Maximum 6
Students are expected to follow their plan, to evaluate the plan and to justify any changes they make to the plan while they are creating the product/solution.
To get a 6 the student: uses appropriate techniques and equipment. The student attempts to follow the plan and mentions any modifications made, resulting in a product/solution of reasonable quality.
Today, you will have 3 (easy) tasks:
1. Use your plan to create your recipe flyer, 2. Create your recipe flyer, 3. Write a paragraph saying if your plan worked (exactly) or not. Include any changes you made to your original design. Remember to give details and explain everything;-)
Year 7 today we will work on the PLAN - Criterion C First let's look at the assessment criteria to see exactly what we need to accomplish to be successful: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgg4pbx8_65hk6ff9gj
Today we have 3 tasks. 1 - Make a list of the resources we will use. 2 - Make a table with the steps needed to create our recipe flyer - Include the time it will take for each step. 3 - Write a paragraph evaluating the plan (saying why it will work;-).
Students are expected to generate 2 feasible designs that meet the design specification and to evaluate these against the design specification. (Remember that this means that you must make sure that your design really does have all of the items you listed in your design specification and then write a sentence says that your design meets the design specification.)
Students are then expected to select one design, justify their choice and evaluate this in detail against the design specification. (Write a paragraph stating WHY you chose one design and then list all of your design specifications individually and write how each one of the design specifications has been met- or will be met.) Example: 3 interesting historical facts. I have included a text box with 3 interesting historical facts that is easy to find.
To get a 6 the student: generates two designs and attempts to evaluate them both against the design specification. The student then attempts to justify the chosen design and evaluate it against the design specification.
Today, I would like you to do 2 things: 1. Open Publisher 2007 and create 2 different page layouts. You do NOT have to put in the recipe or any other information today - just DESIGN the space. 2. Choose one and justify choice
REMEMBER to include: a flag from your country in the upper right hand corner AND your first name and tutor group!
Year 7 - Now, let's move on to the 3rd stage of the Investigation: Formulate a Design Specification. Remember this is the part where we decide which elements are essential to our product and then we create a test (usually a questionnaire) to evaluate our products.
Type Formulate a Design Specification (left justified, font size 16, bold, underlined)
Design Specification must include: -3 interesting historical notes about your recipe or individual ingredients. - how the recipe is important to your family - why you like the recipe -Create 3 more design specifications
Now, create a test to evaluate your product/solution. You will create a Questionnaire. Remember to include a rating scale. (Example: On a scale from 1-5, 1 is awful and 5 is awesome, please answer the following questions.)
Well done Year 7 - Now it's time to start stage 2 of the Investigation. This is the part where we do research.
Please finish all your work during class or for homework;-)
